Memory is stubborn

Invention of the Mizrahim

By Susan Abulhawa, 20 Sept 2017

The State of Israel was conceived at the turn of the 20th century in Eastern Europe by a group of elite European Jews who launched a movement called Zionism that sought to establish a physical nation state exclusive to Jews. It was a typical settler colonial enterprise, complete with the narrative of a divine mandate and a non-existent or savage indigenous population, central to which was the myth … [more]

We expect people to die.

The destruction of the al-Nuri mosque in Mosul is another example of the ‘culturecide’ we’ve become so used to

By Robert Fisk, Thursday 29 June 2017 12:45 BST

Over the years, I’ve almost lost count of the priceless treasures of art and antiquity which I’ve seen with my own eyes – and which now lie in pieces.

Fourteen years ago, racing across Mosul to see the building where US forces had just shot dead the sons of Saddam [more]

Mother of all Hypocrisy

If Trump cares so much about Syrian babies, why is he not condemning the rebels who slaughtered children?

By Robert Fisk, Monday 17 April 2017 12:15 BST

It was the Mother of all Hypocrisy. Some dead Syrian babies matter, I guess. Other dead Syrian babies don’t matter. One mass murder in Syria two weeks ago killed children and babies and stirred our leaders to righteous indignation. But the slaughter in Syria this weekend killed even more children and … [more]

Banned Muslims are Welcomed in Hot Springs

Well, I’ve gotten myself into some weird situations, but today’s was the first time I ever felt the implied threat of physical intimidation.  There was the time Cliff Jackson and I infiltrated a Christianist Glenn Beck telecast from Jerusalem, sponsored mostly by our local Tea Party types.  There was the time Sherry (my beloved) and I went to the Glory Barn (yes, that’s really its name) to see the wannabe televangelist and most assuredly reverend Dwain Miller of [more]

Another odd element to our western outrage

It was bizarre to watch Samantha Power at the UN conveniently forget to mention all the massacres done in America’s name

By Robert Fisk, Thursday 15 December 2016 10:00 BST

So there was Samantha Power doing her “shame” bit in the UN. “Is there no act of barbarism against civilians, no execution of a child that gets under your skin, that just creeps you out a little bit?”, America’s ambassador to the UN asked the Russians and Syrians and … [more]

Religious ideology is a tool

Why the Arabs Don’t Want Us in Syria

By Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., February 22, 2016

In part because my father was murdered by an Arab, I’ve made an effort to understand the impact of U.S. policy in the Mideast and particularly the factors that sometimes motivate bloodthirsty responses from the Islamic world against our country. As we focus on the rise of the Islamic State and search for the source of the savagery that took so many innocent … [more]
