There was a letter to the editor today that provides a glimpse into what passes for Christianity in America’s hinterland.
Before you read the dismal letter, note that there is a Craig Joyner who frequently contributes to the “Reflections” religion section of the Sentinel Record’s Saturday edition. I do not know if today’s letter is from the same person, but suspect they are one and the same. The following excerpt is from the conclusion of his 8/18/2012 article ironically titled “Thou Shall Not Judge?“
Many church denominations have put their faith in the “almighty dollar.” They build massive structures that cost a fortune to maintain, which leads to corrupting the very faith that they were to protect. See I Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from faith.”
Believers, it is your personal responsibility to see that you do not wander from the true faith you have received. Yes, you must judge between right and wrong; God has given you His Spirit of truth in order that you may judge false teachings. You need to know and discern the true Shepherd. You must be able to hear His voice and follow Him. Jesus said in John chapter 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow Me, and I give them eternal life.”
Can you judge His voice from an impostor?
This was then followed by the usual short bio: Craig Joyner has worked and served in the Hot Springs area for 20 years. He has a deep passion for studying the Word of God and sharing with others. His main objective is for believers to continue drawing close to Lord Jesus Christ, seeking the truth of the Word.
Somehow, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine that Craig Joyner doesn’t speak for Him.
The following flummery was published in today’s Sentinel Record (page 11A).
Read it and weep.

This letter is for the evangelicals, those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, adhering to the New Testament as their source for moral and ethical guidance.
Let me ask you a question. How can you continue to be a Democrat? The 2012 Democratic National Convention didn’t want to acknowledge the Creator God until forced. It agreed to mention Him once. It also did not want to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The Democrats embrace same-sex marriage, also late-term abortion — issues that you as a Christian disapprove of. In the other hand, the RNC constantly acknowledges God in its messages. Many speakers ended their addresses saying, “God bless America” and “God bless the delegates.” The RNC also make known its support of Israel and their right to proclaim Jerusalem as their capital.
Take the time to look into the mirror and ask yourself, “Who am I, am I a Democrat just because it’s my party” or are you willing to face reality and accept your calling — standing for righteousness. The Lord is watching you.
