Warning!
I read this letter to the editor in today’s paper, amazed and angry at its profound ignorance, its bigotry, and its proud paranoia. And then I started thinking about that moment in June 2015, when our President, my President, paused for a full thirteen seconds, during his eulogy for Reverend Clementa Pinckney at “Mother Emanuel” in Charleston, South Carolina. Thirteen seconds of silence as Obama looked out over the congregation, then down at his notes, shook his head slightly and broke into “Amazing Grace.”
To write a letter like the one below requires some special kind of stupid. A deep reservoir of racism and hysteria and a willful ignorance of a half century’s progress. Such people exist mostly in the emptiness of their own minds, breaking out only long enough to swallow some flim-flam pulpiteer’s patent medicine show of conspiracy hokum and a rattlesnake stew of yearning for a time long past when only white folks were uppity and everyone else knew their place.
To write a letter like the one below means being part and parcel of the same sort of classy people who wonder out loud if, after eight long years of Obama, they’ll ever be able to get the smell out of the White House. It means having the audacity to insinuate that Obama is not a Christian, that he hates Christians, and then close by begging for the Creator to bless America. Pause for one brief moment and consider the eulogy Donald J. Trump might deliver the next time a deranged narcissist tries to start a race war. Can you really imagine Trump singing “Amazing Grace?”
I cannot.

‘Scary’ final days
Dear editor:
I am convinced that Barack Hussein Obama’s goal was to change America from Christian to (I won’t say what).
I heard years ago that “things” come into a country slowly, much of it in schools, to take over.
What is going on in his last days is “scary.”
I don’t know the history of our past presidents, we have never had one, that I know of, who would even think of doing the irresponsible acts this one is doing.
Will we make it to Jan. 20? Nothing would surprise me. I’m convinced he is trying for a third term.
If you have been listening for the last eight years, you know that he does not like America or Christians.
God bless America. America, bless God.

John, you have once again expressed my feelings in a very eloquent manner. It is so sad that people like this still inhabit our fair land. As I watched TV today, I saw a very moving program about the freedom rides. It is so sad that so long after that time in our history, there are so many who have not managed to move forward.
