Monsieur Jacques d'Nalgar

Under a rock for the next two years.

Monsieur Jacques d’Nalgar is a working curmudgeon with a cat-killing curiosity in politics, religion, history, and other manifestations of irrational human behavior. He resides in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a semi-autonomous region of the United States (a waning political experiment on the third planet of a minor solar system in a remote corner of the Milky Way galaxy), with his wife and other assorted wildlife. ... Jacques is a son and grandson of Baptist preachers, missionaries and educators. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his father was a school headmaster for more than 30 years (and before that, a B-17 navigator in the last months of WW2). He grew up in the Middle East during the turbulent 50s, 60s, and 70s, but left just before Lebanon’s 15-year civil war nightmare began in earnest. Most reputable historians do not associate the onset of that tragic conflict with his departure. He returned for a visit in 1978, three years into the conflict. His right eye still occasionally twitches as a result. ... After colleges in Oklahoma and 16 years working for a company now forever identified with war profiteering and the dark lord Darth Cheney, he moved his family to Hot Springs in 1994. Jacques spends most of his time reading, blogging under a barely-disguised snotty “Freedom Fries” pseudonym, and staring at the sun. He works tirelessly for the OAFS (Obsessive Alliteration-Fondness Syndrome) Foundation, as both its only benefactor and sole beneficiary... Jacques’ political pilgrimage has meandered across much of the regressive-to-progressive continuum. Once a staunch conservative, he found himself suddenly adrift in left field when the rest of the country lurched hard-right after 9-11. He is a frequent critic of our national love affair with wars, rampant nationalism in general, and the resurgent, xenophobic frenzy that masquerades as patriotism ... He once defined his religious confession as Zen Baptist, a burgeoning movement (of one) within the Southern Baptist Convention, seeking to reclaim the mantle of Christian orthodoxy from fevered fundamentalists just itching for Armageddon. When evangelicals embraced the tangerine wankmaggot Trump and rejected Jesus, he abandoned the family faith and warily embraced Episcopalians' peculiar cocktail of ancient traditions and progressive inclusion. Monsieur d’Nalgar may be reached by sending him your questions telepathically, or by sending him money. He prefers the latter.

Shut up

Rep. Paul Ryan is a very stupid man By Hunter, Mon Feb 03, 2014 at 12:27 PM PST   I lived through the Iran Contra incident, and I have lived through a president declaring a new executive privilege to torture. I was alive when Oliver North put on a nice clean suit and testified in …

A lack of academic rigor

Understanding the faith of Cathy McMorris Rodgers By Matthew S. Rindge (Religion News Service), January 31   SPOKANE, Wash. — The Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union speech introduced many Americans to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. While those of us in Spokane are already familiar with our congresswoman, little is known about her alma …

The genitals

Read Genesis carefully   Dear editor: Re. Everette West, Daron McClain and whoever else believes in an eternal hell, there is no such place. The scriptures teach that hell was created for the devil and his angels and anything that was created has an end. And there is life after we leave here. And all …

Politically motivated and theologically inept

New Atheism’s big mistake: Debating creationists solves nothing By Sean McElwee and Abigail Salvatore, Saturday, Feb  1, 2014 09:30 AM CST   Bill Nye and Ken Ham will be debating creationism on Feb. 4, and it’s a bad idea for both scientists and Christians. Ham’s young-earth creationism represents the distinct tendency of American Christian fundamentalists …

And yet here we are

The Selective Secrecy Of Bill De Blasio By Andrew Sullivan, Jan 24 2014 @ 7:56pm   If you were to describe the Israel lobby as a secretive group that enforces the policies of the Israeli government on American politicians in private gatherings, you would be called an anti-Semite. The idea that the Israel lobby is …

What immeasurable folly!

Shall The Fundamentalists Win? Preached by Harry Emerson Fosdick, May 21, 1922   One could easily let his imagination play over this scene and could wonder how history would have come out if Gamaliel’s wise tolerance could have controlled the situation. For though the Jewish leaders seemed superficially to concur in Gamaliel’s judgment, they nevertheless …

Bane of fundamentalism

Dear editor: Historians will surely look back on this generation as an age when ignorance and silliness trumped reason and progress.  Ours is a time pregnant with potential, yet scarred and crippled by war, greed and prejudice.  Why? I’ll lay blame squarely on the bane of fundamentalism.  Whether in religion, or politics, or the social …
