The ugly face of Islamophobia in Orange County, California

The Southern California chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America Relief USA organised a fundraising dinner in Orange County, last month. But guess who also turned up? A motley collection of protesters who can be seen here chanting in the above video distributed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations civil rights group:

As the video shows, the rhetoric of the protesters became increasingly venomous toward the families and children who came to attend the ICNA Relief fundraising dinner. Protesters shouted invective statements such as “Go home terrorist,” “Muhammad is a pervert, Muhammad is a child molester,” “Go home and beat your wife, she needs a good beating,” at the event-goers.

One of the protesters’ guest speakers, seen in the video, is a local councilwoman who denounces the event as “pure, unadulterated evil,” and continues:

I know quite a few Marines who would be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise.

The local paper, the Orange County Register, noted the signs saying “No Sharia law” but added: “In the afternoon, the event had the atmosphere of a July 4 picnic.”

Two Republican congressmen also attended the protest rally, including one, Ed Royce, who spoke of how “multiculturalism” was paralysing America.

And the fundraising? For disaster relief, womens shelters, halal food banks, according to the Islamic Circle of North America.

Orange County is the home of insanity. The original Disneyland is there. The John Birch Society began its life there. Its main hub of air communication with the rest of the world is named after the famous American hero (how many times did we all see him die for his country?) — John Wayne. If there is to be a misconception and a home for it — Orange County is the place for Islamophia.

  1. How does one respond to such hatred in the hardened hearts of these “protestors?” (Even using that word seems to give them a dignity they don’t deserve.)

The issue of mass xenophobia is not one I can begin to approach in this space. I won’t even try.

It is very frightening to me watching this video, and I am neither Muslim nor there in person with the screaming throng. So I can imagine it was terrifying to the Muslim children, and women, and men who were trying to meet peacefully and should not have to defend themselves from such unjustified ugliness. The real terrorists, in this case, are the so-called “patriotic Americans” who could behave so hatefully.

I am saddened by this as I spent my working life in Fullerton and Orange County was my employer for years. Orange County has always been one of the most conservative counties in the US and this really shows how mean they can be. As a Marine Vet I am particularly saddened by the woman’s comments. Most of the Marines I served with were far more caring than this poor example of the human race. Of course we have our share of similar nut cases as for example dear old Miracle Frietag. She would fit right in with that crowd.
