Warning!
This bit of abject asininity appeared in today’s weekly religion section of the Hot Springs Sentinel Record. Once a week, a local minister or concerned citizen opines about this or that theological minutiae in a column titled “Reflections”. In this case, our intrepid newspaper neglected to include Mr. Cunningham’s credentials to why they believe he is qualified to regurgitate this pervasive flavor of “Left Behind” flummery. This particularly silly reflection, while bereft of anything remotely resembling sentience, is nonetheless reflective of what passes for Christianity in America.– Monsieur d’Nalgar, 2/7/2015 CE
Visitor from space
By Donald Cunningham, February 7, 2015
Recently, our planet had a visitor from outer space, and I don’t mean Klaatu.
It was what the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has labeled “2004 BL86,” a giant asteroid, passing just 745,000 miles from the Earth. That’s about three times the distance we are to the moon, and is the closest any large-sized object has come in several centuries.
As I watched the TV news report on this galactic phenomenon, I wondered what the outcome would have been if this 550-meter giant had hit the United States or one of our larger oceans. Certainly, we would have seen enormous tidal waves larger than the one that overswept Japan in 2012, many lives would have been lost, and nature might have been changed for the worse. News anchors urged would-be astronomers to view the asteroid with binoculars or telescopes.
However, in the not-too-distant future, many will see a meteor that will hit the Earth and they will be fleeing for their lives, not taking the time to gaze at the skies.
The Roman Emperor Nero had exiled the disciple John to the isle of Patmos to silence his message of salvation through Christ Jesus. It was during that exile that John had a vision from God of future events to come “in the last days.”
This important body of work is the Book of Revelation. It relates what happens on the Earth after Christ’s true church has been taken up into the kingdom of heaven. There will be a seven-year period known as the Tribulation during which a one-world dictator will arise and, along with a spiritual leader known as the False Prophet, proclaim himself to be God Almighty. He will require everyone to worship him and to receive his mark, either on their forehead or the back of the right hand. Tattoo parlors will have a thriving business. Those who refuse his mark and deny him worship will be persecuted, hunted down and executed. It will be like the Nazi holocaust all over again!
There will be plagues upon the Earth during that terrible time as described in Revelation 8, known as the “Seven Trumpet Judgments.” The first plague is found in verse 7, and it is not difficult to believe when we have seen devastating volcano eruptions in the recent past. This verse could mean passenger planes being knocked out of the sky by an enemy missile or an exploding volcano, and bodies torn apart with their blood being mixed with blazing chunks of metal or debris. God rained hail, fire and lava on Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:16-19:29), and there is no reason why He will not do it again.
John’s vision revealed in verses 8-9 of Chapter 8 that a mountain-sized object will hit the ocean, killing a third of the sea creatures and destroying a third part of the world’s ships. The experimental explosion of the H-Bomb at the Bikini Atoll will seem like child’s play compared to this coming disaster. The ocean will literally be changed to blood, one of the plagues suffered by Egypt as Moses tried to convince Pharaoh to free the captive Hebrews (Exodus 9:18 – 21).
Those who viewed the asteroid BL86 may have seen the very one that will return in the future and destroy all fresh water sources, turning them to poison (verses 10-11). According to NASA scientists, asteroid “1999 AN10“, a 1,800-mega-ton behemoth, will approach the Earth in about 12 years. It passed by our planet in 1946, and it may hit the land, destroying a major portion of the trees and vegetation.
The signs of biblical prophecy are being revealed to those of us who believe the Holy Bible to be the true word of God. We do not take His predictions lightly. The time is almost upon us to witness the return of Christ for His church. There may be many reading this who are like the ones described in 2 Peter 3:4 who scoff and joke about Christ’s return by saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? Since the beginning of creation, it’s been business as usual.”
If this is your attitude, or you claim that you don’t believe in God, be assured that God believes in you. He is giving you the opportunity to confess your sins, turn from your evil ways, and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior before it will be too late to do so. If God did not love you, He would not have allowed His only Son to be crucified in your place. He paid the penalty for your sins (John 3:16).
Take whatever time you have remaining (Hebrews 9:27) in your life to ask God, believing, to reveal Himself to you, and He will (Acts 2:21). If you choose to reject Him, you may find yourself left behind and suffering the terrible holocaust to come!
