It’s Sunday, October 8, and I’ve been reading letters and opinions in today’s paper. One side is right. Everyone else is wrong. I’ve also been thinking all day about the tragedy last week at the Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania…
If the Amish had responded as America did after September 11, they would have immediately burned down the killer’s home. If his wife and children were still inside, too bad — that’s what happens. “Collateral damage” in bloodless, abstract war terms. … [more]

For several months now, a provocative question-and-answer (Q&A) essay has been circulating on the Internet and by e-mail. The essay asks the question “Can a good Muslim be a good American?” and then emphatically answers “NO!”
A few days ago, the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary (ABTS) offered its position on each of the points raised in the essay. ABTS was established in 1960 by American Southern Baptists for the training of Christian workers throughout the Arab world. What follows is … [more]

Yesterday morning (April 27, 2006), Democratic Congressman from Illinois Rahm Emanuel asked and was given permission to address the House for one minute. Mr. Emanuel said, “Mr. Speaker, investigators have recently uncovered a letter from the Republican leadership to special interest lobbyists.” He then read the following letter:
How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth of thy oil wells, for thou shall have $14.5 billion to drill them.
I … [more]

Shocked! World leaders are “shocked” by the outcome of the Palestinian democratic elections. Cable TV’s faux news experts are breathlessly analyzing “what it all means” when people half a world away won’t vote the way we want them to…
Let’s see if we can break it down: With great fanfare and general acclamation (by those same world leaders) Fatah assumes management of an occupied Palestine after Israel tires of the administrative headaches, the expense, and the really bad PR that … [more]

I had always wondered how our nation’s founders (terrorist insurgents that they were) argued the merits of their rebellion to a profoundly Christian population, so I did a little Googling on the subject. Turns out to still be a pretty hot topic (732,000 hits). Anyway, I came across an interesting essay at http://www.wallbuilders.com/resources/search/detail.php?ResourceID=40. Near the end of it, the author quotes “A Political Catechism” written by Francis Hopkinson in 1777. Hopkinson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence … [more]

I noticed the other day that the border between Israel and the Sinai is not a straight line. About halfway across, between Gaza and Aqaba, the border has a couple of protrusions into the Egyptian side (there are other places, but these are the most noticeable). Does anyone know the history of how this border was decided?

From Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter’s December 7 lecture: The 2,000 American dead are an embarrassment. They are transported to their graves in the dark. Funerals are unobtrusive, out of harm’s way. The mutilated rot in their beds, some for the rest of their lives. So the dead and the mutilated both rot, in different kinds of graves. (The British playwright won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature.)
The entire lecture can be seen and read at http://nobelprize.org/. It presents … [more]
