Monsieur Jacques d'Nalgar

Under a rock for the next two years.

Monsieur Jacques d’Nalgar is a working curmudgeon with a cat-killing curiosity in politics, religion, history, and other manifestations of irrational human behavior. He resides in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a semi-autonomous region of the United States (a waning political experiment on the third planet of a minor solar system in a remote corner of the Milky Way galaxy), with his wife and other assorted wildlife. ... Jacques is a son and grandson of Baptist preachers, missionaries and educators. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his father was a school headmaster for more than 30 years (and before that, a B-17 navigator in the last months of WW2). He grew up in the Middle East during the turbulent 50s, 60s, and 70s, but left just before Lebanon’s 15-year civil war nightmare began in earnest. Most reputable historians do not associate the onset of that tragic conflict with his departure. He returned for a visit in 1978, three years into the conflict. His right eye still occasionally twitches as a result. ... After colleges in Oklahoma and 16 years working for a company now forever identified with war profiteering and the dark lord Darth Cheney, he moved his family to Hot Springs in 1994. Jacques spends most of his time reading, blogging under a barely-disguised snotty “Freedom Fries” pseudonym, and staring at the sun. He works tirelessly for the OAFS (Obsessive Alliteration-Fondness Syndrome) Foundation, as both its only benefactor and sole beneficiary... Jacques’ political pilgrimage has meandered across much of the regressive-to-progressive continuum. Once a staunch conservative, he found himself suddenly adrift in left field when the rest of the country lurched hard-right after 9-11. He is a frequent critic of our national love affair with wars, rampant nationalism in general, and the resurgent, xenophobic frenzy that masquerades as patriotism ... He once defined his religious confession as Zen Baptist, a burgeoning movement (of one) within the Southern Baptist Convention, seeking to reclaim the mantle of Christian orthodoxy from fevered fundamentalists just itching for Armageddon. When evangelicals embraced the tangerine wankmaggot Trump and rejected Jesus, he abandoned the family faith and warily embraced Episcopalians' peculiar cocktail of ancient traditions and progressive inclusion. Monsieur d’Nalgar may be reached by sending him your questions telepathically, or by sending him money. He prefers the latter.

Fooled

Dear editor: OK, we have the mainstream media against Trump from the beginning. Constant negatives and none for Hillary. Progressives obviously control the media. Hopefully our voters are educating themselves with alternative means of news besides the mainstream media, as it is totally bias toward Dems. There are so many newsworthy stories that …

Cheez Whiz and lye

Dear editor: Mister Sniffles’ ardent fans often attempt a diversionary tactic to deflect each and every criticism of their much-prayed-for sweet potato.  It’s an old debating trick to ignore the critics and instead demand an immediate and compelling explanation of why the alternative candidate is the better choice.  The tactic usually follows this erudite …

Act in haste, repent in leisure

Another Deadly Drone Mistake: At What Point Do We Say Enough? By Ted Gup, October 3, 2016   It was an obscure item last week that drew little media attention. An apartment building in Afghanistan’s remote Nangarhar province was apparently hit by an American drone strike, killing at least fifteen civilians and injuring thirteen more. …

Peacemaker!

Shimon Peres was no peacemaker. I’ll never forget the sight of pouring blood and burning bodies at Qana By Robert Fisk, Wednesday 28 September 2016 11:00 BST   When the world heard that Shimon Peres had died, it shouted “Peacemaker!” But when I heard that Peres was dead, I thought of blood and fire and …

The full measure of its guilt

“Some People Push Back”: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens By Ward Churchill, September 12, 2001   When queried by reporters concerning his views on the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963, Malcolm X famously – and quite charitably, all things considered – replied that it was merely a case of “chickens coming …

What Ari Shavit Doesn’t Understand About Palestinian Children and Jews By Ziona Ziyona Snir , Sep 14, 2016 9:56 AM   Dear Ari Shavit, Despite my bemusement at your demand to recognize Israel as a Jewish state 68 years after it was recognized as such by the whole world, I don’t mean to get into …

The survival of Christianity in America

A vote for Christianity   Dear editor: On Page 10A of our Sept. 5, 2016, newspaper, “Letters to the editor,” a letter from Dianne Kelly was mentioned under the title “Why pray for Trump?” If Ms. Kelly had read the complete sign, she would have also seen a reference to our website at …
